In-growing Toenails

Most simple treatments for ingrowing toenails have usually been tried by the time a patient seeks the help and advice of a surgeon. These simple measures include bathing the toe and allowing the nail to ‘grow out’ past the fleshy portion of the toe. It is important that toenails are cut straight across, rather than rounded as with finger nails.

In stubborn cases, or cases involving a parocychia (infection around the nail), it is sometimes appropriate to remove the nail and allow the infection to settle as a new normal nail grows back. This may take a few months.

If the problem recurs, it is sometimes appropriate to remove the nail bed to prevent nail re-growth.
